Jesus calls each of us to be a disciple. To be a disciple is to encounter Jesus and to become like him – learning to obey all that he has commanded us. We are to be “transformed into his image with every increasing glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
It is a non-negotiable part of what it means to be a Christian. It involves learning to love God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength.
Life stage discipleship
As humans we pass through identifiable life stages, each of which has its own character. In every life stage there are various tasks that are particularly important: ways we must grow and mature, changes we must accept and respond to, intellectual and emotional challenges to which we must rise. It is also possible to identify particular spiritual tasks that tend to accompany each life stage: ways in which we may grow to know God and areas of discipleship to be embraced. Thus, part of what we want to offer are intentional ways to explore the particular discipleship issues that each life stage raises.
Making the Most of Young Adulthood Course
This is a critical time for forming values and making important decisions that set the trajectory for our lives. The Young Adults Course gives an opportunity to intentionally address some of the issues and challenges that arise in this process.

Making the Most of Mid-Life Retreat/Course
Mid-life can be disorientating (hence the stereotypical mid-life “crisis”), but also a time of rich opportunity and meaningful change. The mid-life course is designed to help us to make the most of these years. Some may also appreciate a small reading and discussion group.

Making the Most of Older Adulthood Course/Retreat
The second half of life? The third age? A second childhood? Whatever we call it, the later years of our lives present their own unique tasks, challenges and opportunities. The course aims to provide an opportunity to reflect on how to use these years well; some may also want to journey with a small discussion group.

Focussed courses
There are some issues that will be important for almost all Christians to engage with because they represent key means by which we grow in our discipleship or central areas of human life. What follows is not comprehensive by any means, but represents what we can offer at the moment:
This four-week course is for new Christians and those who have recently been baptised. It explores some of the primary ways Jesus calls us to follow him and provides space to think about our next steps on the journey.

Kintsugi Hope is a well-being group which provides a safe and supportive space for people who feel, or have felt, overwhelmed, providing tools for self management building towards a more resilient and hopeful future. The group looks at topics such as honesty, anxiety, depression, forgiveness, perfectionism and self-acceptance. Email tim.b@amblecotecc.org.uk to find out more or register your interest in joining a group.
The pre-marriage course helps couples to work through important issues that are best discussed before getting married, whereas the marriage course aims to help already-married couples invest in and enrich their marriage. We run these courses in different ways in response to what is needed. If you’d like to find out more, or to express your interest, get in touch by emailing office@amblecotecc.org.uk.
‘Roots’ is for those who have been walking with Jesus for a while and it seeks to address some of the discipleship challenges that tend to come a bit further down the road. Roots is not a continuous course, but instead consists of 8 ‘modules’, each of which stands alone.
Retreats
Sometimes we need to take time out to reflect on issues of significance for us. This may be prompted by our circumstances or particular life experiences, or may simply become important at a certain point in our discipleship to Jesus. One way to seek a deeper engagement with this part of our journey is to set aside some time for guided retreats which deliberately address such matters. There are currently two such retreats we hope to offer as and when they are needed:
Many of us struggle with regret, hurt, grief, bereavement, disappointment or otherwise unresolved pain from the past. As its name indicates, this retreat aims to help us to come to peace with our past in a meaningful way.
All of us at some point need to come to terms with our own mortality, but to make peace with the future usually involves facing important questions about death and life-after-death. This retreat aims to help us both to articulate our concerns and to respond to them.
Each year we run a discipleship day course, where people give up one day a week (Fridays) for a year to go deeper in their faith and invest in their own spiritual growth and development. The course is free, but does require you commit your term-time Fridays 10am-4pm throughout the year. For more information, or to talk about whether this would be a good fit for you, contact Tim Murray on tim.m@amblecotecc.org.uk
