MISSION 2013

The Story of how young people drew closer to the heart of God whilst reaching out into our community

Mission always passes in a blur. You spend months and months building up to it, planning, organising, engaging, and then it shoots by in what seems like a matter of hours. But whilst the actual Mission week passes so quickly, we are sure that the effects of the week go on for months, years and even lifetimes. The aim of Mission has always been to reach out into our community, to see the need that is on our own doorstep and engage our young people in meeting that need in whatever way we can. And this year was better than ever.

Our main project was a house make-over which many of our generous church family gave to. The aim was simple, to transform the home of a young family in great need. The project went well, and although there were plenty of stressful times including a cupboard with missing hinges, a bunk bed that just wouldn’t go together and what seemed like more and more and more bark needed for the garden, the end result was inspirational. We shared the video of the young family (mother with three children, aged 1, 2 and 5) coming home on Sunday morning, their faces lit up as they wondered about the transformed home. It was a joy to see how young people really can make a difference in the lives of our community.

There were plenty of other projects including building a garden space for a local care home, making a Pensnett families garden a safe place to play, running children’s activities on Hawbush and visiting those in need on Brierley Hill Chapel Street estate.

Along with reaching outward into our community Mission week also gives our young people the opportunity to draw closer to God. Our mornings were spent in house groups in prayer, teaching and prophetic input, whilst our evenings were given over to create a space for God to speak in our youth meetings we call Captivate. During the build up to Mission week we felt the Lord give us a prophetic word about drawing closer to the heart of God and the heart of our community, that as we heard the heartbeat of our community and the heartbeat of God He would work through us to bring us closer to Him and to meet the need in our community. We certainly felt this happen and know that God will continue this journey in our young people.

There is so much more that God did in individual lives over Mission week than could be said in one article. Therefore, we will post a number of articles over the coming weeks from members of our Mission team about what God did and is continuing to do through this amazing week.

Here’s a few photos taken throughout the week:
