The Supremacy of Christ
‘The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of creation…….’(Rev 3:14)
By now you’ll have got the idea! The first and most important things that Jesus says to the churches of Central Asia in His letters are contained in the unique way He introduces Himself to each of the seven churches. This letter is no exception!
This introduction must have left them in no doubt as to who was addressing them – The True and faithful King of all creation.
The Amen
The word amen is also translated in the King James Bible ‘Verily’. Do you remember those parables that Jesus told where He began “Verily, Verily I say unto you…” The “Verily, Verily” is a way of saying listen up, unplug your ears, you are about to hear something that is really important. Jesus is God’s Amen; He is the “Verily, Verily” of His Father. When Jesus describes Himself this way He means that He is sent with a ‘Word’ for the believers and they had better open their ears and take note.
Lord help us to open our ears and take note when you speak through your word
The True Witness
He is The faithful and true Witness. Here is one person who can never be deemed an unreliable witness – His testimony is true. What He has to say is not subjective, it’s not one of many views and opinions, it’s not biased by emotion or influenced by opinion, it’s not old-fashioned or contemporary; it is just plain straight forward truth. What He says is always faithful to the truth. He tells it as it is. It is Him and Him only that can ever, or will ever, possess the complete truth.
Lord help us to know The Truth, because The Truth sets us free.
The Beginning of creation
He is the beginning of creation – what a wonderful title He assigns to Himself! He is the true source and beginning of all things. Therefore nothing exists that is not His. The Laodiceans may have been a very creative bunch, they’d invented a special eye salve, they had the best banking system in Central Asia and they had developed a strong clothing and fashion industry, but both believer and unbeliever alike had forgotten who was the true source of even their creativity.
Lord save us from our pride, may we always remember that you are our source. By you all things have been created, all things have been created through you and for you and in you all things hold together. (Col 1:15-21)
